This year, the seniors of Rochester High School have to make an important decision that will determine their future and the path their careers will take. Deciding where to attend college is a difficult decision. It can be based on many things, such as education-wise, the environment, or even the student body. Rochester High School is heavily driven by school spirit, and many enjoy showing it. Michigan State University students have similar goals and school spirit as the Falcons at Rochester High do.

The student section on game day at MSU is full of spirit. Everyone is packed in the student section. Everyone is yelling and jumping around in excitement. Spartans always show up for the team and have a good attitude while doing it. Often, people show up earlier to show their unwavering support. “Standing in a crowd of people who share the same enthusiasm for your team is a feeling like no other”. 

Some students’ favorite parts of being in the student section are being surrounded by people who have the same passion as MSU football.  The chants and traditions that are done in the student section are also some components that students enjoy. Usually, with new students, you don’t get taught anything for the student section. You just learn as you go by mimicking other students. Tailgating is also another way new students can get involved in the game day traditions. It gives a sense of community.

Some of the most memorable moments for freshmen is their first game. The first Big Ten football games are different from high school football games. Freshmen will go with people on their floor or their new roommates. It brings a new sense of excitement. Everything is so new. It is an amazing way to start the freshman year of college. 

For big rivalry games, it’s a little bit of a different experience. People wake up earlier to tailgate longer, and you can feel the tension everywhere in a fun way. Everyone is more spirited, louder, and competitive. Even students who don’t necessarily care about football get on the bandwagon during a Michigan vs Michigan State football game. It produces memories you will never forget.

These traditions are what make people feel connected to past alumni and the ones who will come after. It gives a “we are a part of the same thing” feeling. You feel a part of something, and it gives you a sense of community.
