Rochester high school has been holding Veterans breakfast for as long as we could remember. Every year on November 11 we hold a special breakfast for the Veterans to express our appreciation for everyone that served for our country. We hold this breakfast with the help of the student council here at Rochester Highschool. I decided to be curious and interview people in the student council who work early in the morning to make sure everything is ready before the veterans arrive. I wanted to learn more about what goes on in setting everything up in this event so I decided to interview a student from the student council who helped organize it. Marwa EL Hassnoui is a student at the student council and she explained “we met early in the mornings to set up the tables and decorate the room while also preparing the food, so we have as much time as possible to decorate”.
The breakfast has its reasons as to why it’s even an event. It’s an event so we can all as a school/community come together and cherish the veterans that served and to also remind our students as to why we should be thankful and celebrate this holiday. Students in RHS said they liked helping out because they felt like they were doing something in return for the veterans. They also said they always feel extra good when giving back to the community.
The lunch took place in our teachers cafeteria but everything was prepared with love and a lot of thankfulness. While veterans ate, all the classes were getting prepared to go out and place flags towards the entrances of the school. A lot of veterans during breakfast shared their experiences and memories from when they served.
Hosting veterans breakfast is always an amazing and refreshing experience for the school because not only does it remind us how much people sacrifice but also how much they mean to us that we created a holiday for them. This event showed us all here at Rhs that it is truly the small things that matter even if that means spending a little bit of your time devoting for people that have made your community a better place. Overall the breakfast was a perfect way to bring students and veterans together and appreciate the people who served our country.
