With all eyes on the Indiana University football team following their first-ever National Championship win, defeating the Miami Hurricanes right in their home stadium, 27-21. This historic win on Jan. 19th, 2026, capped off a perfect season run, the Hoosiers going 16-0. Leading the team, third-year quarterback Fernando Mendoza has recently become an internet sensation. This recently declared Heisman Trophy winner now shares his inspiring “underdog journey.” His genuine character and work ethic, among other admirable qualities, have resonated deeply with our own athletes at Rochester High. He carries himself with perseverance and dedication that many local athletes strive to emulate.
Interviews with several Rochester athletes reveal the profound impact of Mendoza’s story on young athletes. Joell Dudley, a 12th-grade varsity boys’ basketball player, was particularly struck by Mendoza’s unwavering commitment to his faith. He shares, “I really like how he keeps his faith first. And he has a really strong family around him.” When asked about his own athletic journey, Dudley shares that he has played at Rochester for two years, noting that he strongly agrees with Mendoza’s great investments and his bond with his team, on and off the field/court. A strong foundation is essential to a successful team, emphasizing that “It’s easier to do for your teammates, rather than just do it for yourself.”
Similarly, this sentiment aligns closely with other Rochester athletes’ personal statements. Emma Max, a Rochester senior and committed athlete, playing women’s lacrosse at Saginaw Valley State University in the fall, notes that “Family is the most important thing and can help you through the hard times and athletic mental block.”
Max, being a committed athlete, recognizes that Mendoza’s success at the college level, and soon entering the NFL, is not just about his talent but also the support system that’s propelled him through his entire athletic journey, getting him where he is today. Mendoza shared in an interview that his Mother is his sole motivator. He said, “My mother is my why. To see her fight and overcome the struggle with the optimism that she has. She’s been a great role model.”When asked what her “why” is, Max replied, “My teammates because I´m not only playing for myself, I’m playing for the people around me.”
Together, these interviews showcase how strong faith, deep family connections, and team camaraderie play a vital role in helping athletes of all sports stay motivated and overcome hardship in their sports. Through personal belief and the encouragement of loved ones and teammates, these elements create a strong foundation of resilience and success in sports.
