Art teachers and club sponsors Jessica (McLean) Huavare and Rachel Rose started off Art Club on Monday, Sept. 16 by passing out candy and discussing plans for the year, including making origami to decorate the art rooms, preparing for banner night and planning for the mural the art students will help create on the walls of RHS.
Art Club gives students the opportunity to explore different art mediums and help out their community with their talent. Some members of Art Club are also members of the Art National Honors Society. This allows them to gain points for volunteering and their time.
Senior Celeste Ybarra has been a member of Art Club for three years and is also a member of Art NHS.
“Art club is a place to try new things,” Ybarra said. “I like working with acrylic paint and pen, but Art Club is everybody’s ideas together. Art NHS will give me a chance to get scholarships for college since school is so expensive.”
Students like Ybarra will earn their scholarships by working with the community.
“We’ve done murals and banners in the Rochester Area,” Mrs. (McLean) Huavare said. “We’ve done everything from working with the old peoples’ center and elementary schools.”
