The NFL season has concluded and we have arrived at the biggest game of the year to wrap it up. No matter who is playing, fans come together from all over the country and tune in to watch one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Whether it is the game itself, the halftime performance, or the commercials, everyone can find something to enjoy. This year, the Super Bowl featured the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, two teams who met in the Super Bowl not long ago. One team looked to make history while the other wanted to take the crown. No matter the outcome, this was going to be game to look back on.
This year, the Super Bowl took place in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome, the Saints home stadium. They played on Feb. 9 in the primetime slot at 6:30. The Super Bowl is always important and exciting, but this year there was more on the line. The Chiefs weren’t just playing for the Lombardi Trophy, but for history. If the Chiefs were to win, they would become the first team in NFL history to “three-peat” after their two Super Bowl victories in the last two years. Because of the circumstances, the Eagles were underdogs going into the game with a tight +1.5 spread. With so much on the line in this game, everyone thought this game would be a competitive one.
The Kansas City Chiefs ruled the regular season with a record of 15-2 going into the playoffs. They easily took over not just the AFC West but all of the AFC. They won the AFC West division title for the ninth season in a row, and went on their way to claim the number one overall seed in the AFC for the fourth time since 2020. The Chiefs success this season was no shocker after the dynasty they have formed over the past decade. On the other hand, the Philadelphia Eagles were more of a dark horse throughout the season. After they got off to a slow 2-2 start, fans started to disregard them despite their success last season. However, they went on a run to win their next 10 games and finished the regular season with a 14-3 record. The won the NFC East division title, earning them the number two seed in the NFC behind the Detroit Lions. The Eagles didn’t have very stiff competition during the season, so naturally lots of fans doubted their potential when faced against good teams. Despite this criticism, the Eagles cruised through the playoffs and no one looked to be slowing them down as they soared to the Super Bowl.
After all the wait and anticipation the big game finally arrived. It’s safe to say most people believed this would be a close game. With two very talented offenses and strong defensive threats coming from both sides of the ball, this game was set to be a good one. However, even with history on the line for the Chiefs, nothing phased the Eagles. All ideas of a close and competitive game flew out the window as the Eagles took a 24-0 lead going in halftime. We have learned overtime to never doubt the comeback ability of the Chiefs and the “Mahomes Magic”, but the Eagles made sure to shut that statement down. Nothing was stopping the Eagles as they continued their hot start all the way to final seconds, beating the Chiefs 44-20 and crushing their three-peat dreams. There were no signs of life for the Chiefs during every second of the game, as the Eagles never let off the gas pedal. They certainly earned that Lombardi Trophy fair and square.
For the second straight year the Super Bowl reached a record audience, bringing in 126 million U.S watchers. Lots of these people didn’t just tune in to watch the game, but also the halftime performance. For some, the halftime show is the highlight of the Super Bowl, and this year it didn’t disappoint. Kendrick Lamar headlined preforming some of his big hits like “HUMBLE.”, “luther”, “tv off”, and “squabble up”. Additionally, he brought out female pop artist SZA to accompany him as they sang their hit song, “All the Stars”. Lamar wrapped up the show with his recent grammy award winning hit “Not Like Us”, which certainly sent the halftime off with a bang. Lamar certainly brought his best to the field and gave the Super Bowl the musical aspect so many fans tune in for.
After an exciting NFL season, Super Bowl lIX was a great sendoff to wrap it all up. Whether you tuned in for the game, the halftime show, or the festivities, it is safe to say all aspects of the Super Bowl were exciting and a great way to close a fantastic NFL season.
