As the new year begins, we can look forward to a new awards season! Each year, cinema nominates its best performances, movies, and television shows that are deserving of recognition. The first major award ceremony for 2025 was the Golden Globes, which took the media by storm for its comedic hosting, celebrity appearances, and of course, the awards. Hit movies such as Wicked, Challengers, and Inside Out two were nominated, along with their respective actors such as Zendaya and Ariana Grande.
This year, comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the Globes. She made a dazzling debut as the host for the first of many times and made sure to leave her mark. Junior Aliya Bartz is an avid award show watcher, so a good host is crucial to her experience watching the Golden Globes. “I liked her as the host, she was so funny while making fun of celebrities but she was still being respectful,” Bartz tells me.
Even though the Globes are not as prestigious as the Oscars in March, they still serve as a kick-off for all the award shows to come throughout the year. The most anticipated categories for this year’s Golden Globes were Best Motion Picture and Best Performances by a male and female actor. The movies and actors nominated in these categories compete for the top spot each year using campaigns. Most who are nominated campaign for their work, as taking home the trophy is extremely important to them and each person who has helped them get nominated. Bartz shared her thoughts on who she wanted to win, “I was happy Demi Moore won best actress, and her speech was very inspirational.” Fellow Junior, Abbey Amman, also shared her input on who won best picture for a drama film, “I didn’t even watch the movie that won. I wanted Wicked to win so bad and when it didn’t, I stopped watching.”
Of course, an award show is not a proper award show without juicy celebrity moments. Award shows such as the Golden Globes are a chance for the people who are at the top of their industries to get together and look good doing it. Amman shares her favorite celeb moments, “Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner popping up at the show was kind of random but cute, I would’ve never thought they would start dating.” Bartz also shares her thoughts and observations while watching the red carpet through social media, “I was not expecting Zendaya to be wearing that ginormous rock on her ring finger to the Golden Globes like I need to know if she’s engaged or not.”
Of course, an award show is not an award show without fashion! Looks from designers such as Gucci, Versace, and Tom Ford made an appearance through these celebrities and made each person on the carpet shine. Bartz especially loves this part of the show, “It’s so much fun to judge celebrity outfits from my couch. I loved Demi Moore’s look the most, she looked so chic compared to other people.”
This year’s award season is just starting up, and the talent that was displayed through cinema in 2024 will finally get to be displayed and awarded respectively throughout the new year!
