Whether you’re into action, drama, romantic comedies, or musicals, 2024 was undoubtedly a big year for new movies. The year was full of unique, fresh, and original screenplays and films. The Golden Globes, which took place on January 5, was a great way to wrap up a year of groundbreaking films, celebrate performers worldwide, and reflect on the film industry’s highlights from the past year.
The Golden Globes celebrated a wide range of categories, consisting of performances, costuming, and original scoring. However, some of the most anticipated awards were given towards the end of the night. Some notable women who took home Golden Globes for their incredible on-screen performances were Demi Moore in “The Substance,” Zoe Saldaña in Emila Pérez and Fernanda Torres in “I’m Still Here.” Some in the male category include Adrien Brody in “The Brutalist,” Sebastian Stan in “A Different Man,” and Kieran Culkin in “A Real Pain.”
The performances onscreen were undoubtedly incredible this year, but we can’t forget to credit the hard-working people off-screen and the special effects that helped bring the magic to the big screen. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won Best Original Score for “Challengers.” This film which kicked off the summer, shocked and intrigued audiences with its electric performances. Mike Faist, Zendaya, and Josh O’Connor star as the unforgettable love triangle and competitive tennis teammates who captivated audiences back in April of 2024.
Taking home the Globe for Box Office Achievement was none other than the hilarious and heartwarming musical, “Wicked.” Wicked graced screens in November 2022 and was a complete love letter to all forms of musical theater through the ages. Starring pop icon Ariana Grande and Broadway performer Cynthia Erivo, the movie hit the highest-grossing amount for a musical movie adaptation in film history. This is partially owed to all of the unique promotions that dropped before its release with items like Wicked Starbucks drinks, pillows, Funko Pops, and even Wicked Build-a-Bears! There is no doubt that Pink goes well with green.
Actor Timothée Chalamet made some incredible accomplishments this year with two highly successful films. His first, Dune 2, was released in theaters on the first of March, where he starred alongside costars Austin Butler, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh. This movie was a follow up to the first Dune movie and has surpassed 700 million at the box office.
A Complete Unknown was Chalamet’s second hit film this year. He stars as a young Bob Dylan alongside co-star, Ellie Fanning, playing a character based on Dylan’s real life love interest. This was not the only biopic featured in 2024s movie lineup. Back to Black, a tribute to beloved singer Amy Winehouse, released in April. Although this film didn’t receive raving reviews or high box office numbers, the film’s importance is still exceptionally relevant because it pays respects and celebrates Winehouse’s resonating legacy.
2024 was a year of daring, bold, and creative choices in the film industry. As we kick 2025, keep an eye out for some upcoming releases like “Avatar 3”, “A Minecraft Movie”, “Elio” and “Jurassic World: Rebirth”.
