Although there’s lots of excitement surrounding the Lions (as there should be), many forget about the action happening a couple blocks down Woodward Ave. The NBA season is in full swing, which means the Detroit Pistons are over at Little Caesars Arena. We are a little under halfway through the season and the Pistons have been putting in the work. The team is having one of its better seasons that we’ve seen in a while. With so many games to be played, maybe a miracle run is in the cards for this team.
The work for the Pistons all began in the off-season. We saw lots of changes made in terms of the team. Lots of new faces arrived, but along with that, a handful of players were let go. It was hard to see so many changes to the team being made, but it was time to try something new. One of the bigger concerns that contributed to the team’s previous struggle was the lack of age and experience. The Pistons have had one of the youngest teams in the NBA for the past couple of seasons. Although it’s great to develop players, the lack of experience definitely contributed to the team’s overall struggle. Therefore, one of the off-season goals for the Pistons front office was to add some depth and veterans to their young core.
There is so much to be excited about with star young players like Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Jalen Duren, but a couple of veterans can help this team develop even more. Some additions made this offseason included 32-year-old Forward Tim Hardaway Jr., 28-year-old Guard Malik Beasley, and former Piston from 2015-2018, Tobias Harris. The Pistons also brought back many key returners in Isaiah Stewart, Simone Fontecchio, Ausar Thompson, and Marcus Sasser. The team this season still is the 4th youngest in the NBA with an average age of 25, but the offseason rebuild gave hope for a successful season.
The Detroit Pistons have struggled a lot in the past 10 years, with their last winning record being in the 2015-16 season. Since then the Pistons have only even come close to a .500 record once, while the rest have been a total bust. The worst of it came from last season with a historically bad record of 14-68. Players and fans alike have been waiting for a spark to build this team back up to success.
So far this season, it seems success may not be out of reach for this squad. At this point in time, they are doing better than they have in the past six seasons. The season got off to a slow start at 1-4 to end October, and everyone thought this season would be another rogue one. For most of the season so far the Pistons have trailed a couple of games behind .500. They went into 2025 with a 14-18 record, and from that moment on the Pistons have performed to their own New Year’s resolution. They won their first five games of the new year putting them at 19-18 and their first winning record of the season. Many more games are still to come for the Pistons, but they are off to a great start as they continue their January hot streak. This is finally looking like a promising season for the Pistons.
