Rebecca Yarros, a bestselling romance author, has entered the world of fantasy in her new novel, Fourth Wing. Our main protagonist, Violet Sorrengail, has trained her whole life to become a scribe and spend the rest of her days recording history. Her mother, the notorious General Sorrengail, tells her that she will attend Basgaith War College, but not as a scribe– as a dragon rider. The book follows Violet as she overcomes deathly challenges and even engages in a forbidden romance with Xaden Riorson, the son of the leader of the Tyrrish Rebellion– The son of the man that killed her brother.
Many, many people across the globe have rated Fourth Wing five out of five stars, and even deemed it the book of the year. I can’t help but admit I am in the same boat as them! At school, a handful of teachers also enjoyed reading Fourth Wing over this first semester. I made it my mission to ask their opinions!
My first stop was Ms. Laurain, a biology teacher and volleyball coach here at Rochester High School. She was ecstatic to find out others were reading the same book, “It’s the only book I’ve ever wanted to reread right away!” Ms. Laurain said, “I give it five plus stars!” Her excitement was contagious, making me smile.
While I was in Ms. Laurain’s room, her classroom neighbor, Ms. Slomka, commented that Fourth Wing was an amazing must-read and she was currently on the second book of the series: Iron Flame.
I must say, I agree with both teachers! When I read Fourth Wing for the first time, I finished it in about two days. The slow-burn romance was my favorite part and I loved seeing how the characters developed over the course of the novel. I noticed many little hints that contributed to the second book and my conclusion is: Rebecca Yarros is a genius.
Fourth Wing was a wild ride, with many plot twists and theories to dissect. Yarros’ writing style was very captivating and made for an anticipating read. I mean, I couldn’t put the book down!
If you enjoy fantasy books with a twist of romance– enemies to lovers, of course– then I think Fourth Wing would be right up your alley!
