Are you looking for something to do over winter break? Whether you’re an avid reader or not, here are some book recommendations to check out if the weather gets too rough.
The first book, or rather, book series that I would recommend this winter is titled “Chloe by Design.” I used to be interested in fashion when I was younger, and even though I’m not as interested anymore, I still really enjoyed this series. It follows high-schooler Chloe Montgomery as she goes from participating in a teen fashion competition to interning for a famous designer in NYC. As someone who knows nothing about fashion and how it works, I definitely learned a lot of information about the fashion industry from these books, like all the steps that go into making Fashion Week possible. As a bonus, the books also have pictures of all of the designs mentioned drawn by a professional fashion illustrator, which helps to understand what the characters in the story are creating. If you enjoy fashion or want to learn about something new, this could be the series for you.
The second book series that I would recommend this winter is “Pretty Little Liars.” I’ve watched the entire TV show in the past and have enjoyed it, so I wanted to try reading its older books. The premise of the book is that clique leader Alison DiLaurentis goes missing during a sleepover with her friends. After her disappearance, her friends start to receive anonymous messages from a sender named ‘A’, threatening to expose all of their secrets that only Alison would know. The way that the books are structured, each chapter is written about one of the 4 main characters individually, which helps to keep the plots straight. If you’re a fan of drama or just like solving mysteries, maybe this series would be up your alley.
The last book I recommend this winter is the “IT” novel, where seven children have to find and defeat a killer clown, and must return to their hometown to do so again 27 years later. If you’ve seen this book, you already know how thick it is; a whopping 1153 pages, making it the longest book I’ve ever read. Even so, I was up for the challenge when I bought it earlier this year, even though I’ve always had mixed feelings about the horror genre. Luckily, “IT” didn’t scare me at all, and I can happily say that I enjoyed it! The excessive detailing in particular was very interesting to me because the abundance of it almost made it harder to imagine the scenarios in my head instead of easier. If you’re a fan of horror, or you want to try something new, like me, this could be the novel for you.
I interviewed another student to see what type of book she would recommend for this winter. Senior Dhriti Patel offered up a novel titled “A Man Called Ove.” She gave it thoughtful praise by stating, “I liked this book a lot because of the way it made me think differently about people and the normal/simple daily interactions they have. It reminded me about how even though you may not realize it at the moment, each little interaction you have can matter more than you think.”
Whatever plans you might have for winter break, it’s always nice to stop, pick up a book, and relax the day away.
