Girls Who Code, Perception, Asian Culture Club, Maker Club, American Red Cross Club, Indian American Student Association, Gender Sexuality Alliance Club, The Falcon Flock Club, Balkan Culture Club… Do any of these interest you?
RHS offers a wide variety of clubs. This year, in particular, we had a new wave of creative minds. Clubs play a superior role in school, branching out your world of opportunities. It gives you a chance to meet new people, be creative, and try new things. Rochester offers many clubs for each person’s interests. There are clubs for climate change, cultures, coding, healthcare and so much more. It is so important to get involved at Rochester, because not only do you get time to do your hobbies outside of school, you can meet within your school. Joining clubs lets you meet so many new people and have a good time along the way.
One of RHS’s new clubs is Girls Who Code. A student organization empowering girls in STEM, and specifically in Computer Science, sponsored by Mrs. Reckling.
Co-founder Megna Srikanth says, “This is a field where women can excel in, so why aren’t there more girls?” Co-founders Megna Srikanth and Cecilia Zhou came together to create an outlet for girls to expand their knowledge of the programming world. Their mission for Girls Who Code is to inspire, educate, and equip girls with coding skills that are needed to pursue 21st-century opportunities. They also envision reaching gender parity in the computing and technology sectors.
RHS is super diverse with people from all over the world. Sponsored by Mrs. Youngs, Asian Culture Club wants to raise awareness of the many Asian cultures and learn the history behind them. The members can also bring in food, decor, and talk about where they came from and their countries’ history. The club is interactive, and at each meeting they talk about a new culture. Founder Nishka Sawker says, “We want to educate ourselves and other students on the wide variety of cultures all throughout Asia.”
The American Red Cross Club is one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the world, and joining the RHS student chapter will help you make a difference in other people’s lives, all while maximizing your talents, learning new skills, improving your resume, and meeting new people.
Members of the new American Red Cross Club will work towards learning and educating others about safety, disaster preparedness, and life-saving skills while developing their leadership skills, and participating in service projects. At meetings, they’ll share information, brainstorm, plan community service projects, and discuss related topics of interest. Also, if you want to go into the medical field this would be a great club to join.
Next up is a very exciting club that has gotten everyone’s attention. The Falcon Flock Club is sponsored by Mrs. O’Toole. This club does many things such as doing caretaking activities, fundraisers, bonding with the chickens, and even chicken yoga! The Falcon Flock Club works on integrating our chicken flock into school activities to support the flock. Club members also assist with caretaking tasks: cleaning the bedding weekly, racking the area, and maintaining an inventory of supplies like bedding and feed. Members also work to beautify the courtyard space.
RHS has a wide range of clubs you can join, many of which have a goal and strive for different things. Joining clubs can be the starting point for something great. Whether you start a club, run a club, or become a member, you can do something special for RHS.
